August is the highlight of the Apulian summer. This is the month in which the largest number of events, festivals and concerts are concentrated.
Here is our selection of events not to be missed in August in Puglia.
BARI JAZZ FESTIVAL
(Minareto di Fasano, August)
In the beautiful setting of the Minaret of Fasano will take place some concerts of the Bari Jazz Festival. We point out those of Vitor Araujo (August 9th), Aziza Ibrahim (August 18th) and Redi Hasa & Michel Godard. (August 19th).
LOCUS FESTIVAL
(Locorotondo, July 27 – August 14)
In the heart of the Trulli Valley comes back one of the most international Italian festivals. An event able to blend the magic of the territory with a unique musical and cultural offer.
More and more at the forefront of music, the Locus festival looks beyond sensorial, spatial and temporal boundaries, offering great performances and light installations in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Locorotondo.
This year’s complete line-up boasts names such as Lauryn Hill, FKJ and Mammal Hands.
CEGLIE FOOD FESTIVAL
(Ceglie Messapica, August 2 – 5)
The Ceglie Food Festival is an opportunity to meet traditional flavors, gastronomic shows and many other initiatives.
This event is very important for the entire province of Brindisi and for all Puglia, as it attracts interest from all over the world, earning Ceglie Messapica the status of the Apulian capital of gastronomy.
YIRUMA PIANO SESSION
(Martina Franca, August 6)
For his first time in Italy, Yiruma chose Puglia, and in particular Martina Franca. The South Korean pianist will be the star of the third edition of Piano Lab, the festival dedicated to the world of piano organized by La Ghironda association.
On Tuesday 6th August, at 9.30 pm, in the extraordinary setting of the Atrio dell’Ateneo Bruni in Martina Franca, Yiruma, among the most beloved pianists in the world, will perform for the exclusive “Yiruma Concert Indigo in Italy”, his live debut in Italy for a long-awaited date. SAN ROCCO FESTIVAL
(Locorotondo, August 15)
The primacy of the most important religious festival of Locorotondo belongs to San Rocco. This event takes place on August 15th and that brings together the entire population and many tourists. This event is characterized by band concerts, the great cattle fair and the solemn procession in honor of San Rocco. But the highlight of the festival is the pyrotechnics festival, one of the oldest in South Italy, where the best fireworks launchers compete for the title in a spectacular competition.
LA NOTTE DEI BRIGANTI
(Alberobello, August 17 – 18)
La Notte dei Briganti (The Night of Brigands) aims to offer a moment of reflection and celebration. The theatrical show is staged in the woods to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the atmosphere, the landscape context and the living conditions in the mid-1800s in Southern Italy. The organizers wanted to give a very suggestive and natural touch to the event telling the brigandage, a historical event little known or often told in a superficial way.
The theatrical show, consisting of 7 scenes, takes place in a wooded path of about 1.2 km, therefore it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes.
IMAGINARIA
(Conversano, August 19 – 24)
Imaginaria, now in its seventeenth edition, is an event that has acquired an international level and is part of a path of profound cultural innovation.
Imaginaria is an event that lives in symbiosis with the historical center of Conversano and in particular with the Medieval Complex of San Benedetto, a place of incredible architectural and artistic value in the heart of the town.
VISCERAL LITTORAL – PERFORMANCE SITE SPECIFIC BY SHERWOOD CHEN
(Polignano a Mare, August 20)
The French-American artist and performer Sherwood Chen will give life to a site-specific performance in Polignano resulting from the workshop “Visceral Littoral” which will see the participation of dancers from all over the world and who will inaugurate the three days of Pv12 Live Art Act.
ADRIATIC CUP 2019
(Brindisi, August 23 – 25)
Drivers and boats from different countries will compete in various categories and nautical disciplines.
Also this year the Adriatic Cup is back, the event that traditionally takes place in the suggestive stretch of water of the internal port of Brindisi, which is part of the Mediterranean Grand Prix.
An event that over the years, growing, has changed skin. Not only sport, not only the powerful boats of F2, the evolution of hydrofly and the performances of the young promises of the world powerboat, but also tourism and territorial marketing.
LA NOTTE DELLA TARANTA
(Melpignano, August 24)
La Notte della Taranta is the symbol of the vitality of Salento and the largest popular music festival in Italy.
Over 100,000 spectators annually invade the town of Melpignano, dancing to the sound of tambourines that also infects rock stars and artists of very different musical genres called to perform on the stage of the ‘Concertone’.
La Notte della Taranta is a traveling festival, dedicated to the rediscovery and enhancement of traditional Salentine music and its fusion with other musical languages, from world music to rock, from jazz to symphonic music.
For about a month the musicians and dancers of the Notte della Taranta will take the festival in many towns of Salento, until arriving on August 24th in Melpignano for the great final concert.
The Festival has many guests from the international and Italian music scene.
