Fishing Experience

Overview

A Gentle Morning on the Adriatic with a Local Fisherman

In the harbour of Monopoli, the day begins early. Small fishing boats slip quietly out into the Adriatic as the coastline slowly wakes with the morning light.

A morning at sea offers a simple and authentic way to experience the waters that have shaped this part of Puglia for generations. Time moves gently on the Adriatic — a few unhurried hours guided by the rhythm of the sea and the quiet knowledge of a local fisherman.

Salt air, calm water, open sky.

Fishing in Puglia

Along the Puglian coast, fishing has long been part of everyday life. In towns like Monopoli, the harbour still carries the quiet routines of the sea — boats returning with their catch, fishermen repairing nets, the scent of salt in the morning air.

Traditional methods are still widely used. Bolentino fishing, practiced from small boats, lowers weighted lines into the clear Adriatic waters, while octopus fishing follows the rocky seabed where these creatures naturally hide.

Seen from the water, the coast reveals a different perspective — the old town rising from the shoreline, the open horizon of the Adriatic, and the calm rhythm that naturally comes with being at sea.

The Experience

From the harbour of Monopoli, a small traditional fishing boat heads out into the Adriatic as the morning light spreads across the sea. The historic town slowly recedes behind you while the coastline opens along the horizon.

Once offshore, you will experience bolentino fishing, a traditional method used along this stretch of coast. The fisherman prepares the lines and bait, sharing small insights into techniques that have been passed down through generations.

Between casts, the pace remains gentle. The quiet movement of the boat, the fresh sea air, and the wide view of the Puglian coast create a moment that feels calm and unhurried. Coffee and pastries are served on board, adding a simple touch of local hospitality.

The outing lasts around four hours — enough time to settle into the rhythm of the sea and experience fishing along the Adriatic coast of Puglia.
